The town

The town of Kangerlussuaq is at the end of Kangerlussuaq fiord (Søndre Strømfjord) app. 200 km from the coast – only a few minutes from the ice sheet. Kangerlussuaq has Greenland’s most visited airport. Approximately 650 people live permanently in Kangerlussuaq and all of them are more or less connected to Mittarfeqarfiit (Greenland Airports), Hotel Kangerlussuaq and Air Greenland as well as the local tourist operators.

The history

Greenland’s first airstrip was marked on the clay plains at the bottom of Kangerlussuaq fiord in the summer of 1928 when two American daredevils, Bert Hassel and Parker Cramer, wanted to fly from USA to Sweden over Greenland.

American military base
In the 30s and 40s a military base for the American air force was built with the code name ”Bluie West 8 Sondrestrom”, which was a 5,000 feet (1.7 km) airstrip made from compacted clay and gravel with limited base facilities. In 1992 the Americans left Kangerlussuaq.

Mittarfeqarfiit
Today the airport is a civilian airport, and in just a few years Mittarfeqarfiit (Greenland Airports) has created a modern conference destination here. In continuation of the airport terminal you find Hotel Kangerlussuaq, a modern hotel which received 3 stars in the year 2000. Today, the airport in Kangerlussuaq services in excess of 250,000 passengers, and the hotel provides overnight stays for 20,000 people.
